Poliment for traditional gilding techniques

Poliment is the central base for classic water gilding. One of the most traditional techniques for producing high-gloss gold surfaces in interior applications. It is applied in several layers onto a sanded chalk ground and then covered with gold leaf and polished to a high shine using an agate burnisher.
The special mixture of glue and clay (bole) provides excellent polishing properties and makes poliment the ideal base for brilliant gilding, as used for frames, furniture or restorations.

Kölner Classic Poliment

Poliment is also known as bole – a clay-like substance. It is applied to the prepared surface, usually gesso. Gesso is a mixture of chalk and glue. The gold is then applied. The poliment enhancesthe tone and lustre of the gold during the polishing/burnishing process. Remove with glue (skin glue or rabbit glue), gelatine or egg whites before application.Every gilder usually develops its own formula. Polishing size powder

Synthetic and ready to use Polishing Ground Powder for an easier and time-saving water-gilding. Advantage of this system is better dosage according to your requirements and the shelf life. Compared to commercially available burnishing clay (wet or dry), the Polishing Ground needs no paste application. The gilding requires some expert knowledges, skill and practice.
